The Digital Britain report has resulted in many suggestions as to how the UK mobile broadband operators can work to help provide the support for the required minimum access to a 2Mbps connection. One suggestion is that frequency that is currently controlled by O2 and Vodafone will need to be shared among the other operators. One of which has commented that they are enjoying the negotiations.
Lord Carter is currently negotiating with the networks over the frequency that they are using to provide 2G connections. He would like to distribute some of the frequency among the other operators. This allocation will help all of the operators to assist with providing access to high speed Internet in the more rural areas of Britain.
Vodafone have commented that they are happy that the requests for handing back some spectrum have been reduced from the initial proposals. It is expected to offer the spectrum in return for some high speed spectrum when it becomes available. They have stated the range of frequencies that they would be interested in but are still keeping their cards close to their chest at this stage in the negotiations.
Vodafone are happy to be involved in swapping spectrum with other operators. This is what has been suggested by Ofcom. O2 have also stated that they are in favour of the recommendations that negotiations are well conducted to reduce any implications with their customers.
Although O2 mobile broadband is happy to be involved in a reasonable debate and negotiation, they would prefer their own routes rather than direct communication with the government.
It is clear that there is going to be a lot of news over the coming months and years about the Digital Britain report and related events. The full report will be released in the summer where it is expected that the proposals will be more detailed along with more detailed suggestions as to how the proposals will be implemented.
