Mobile phone transmitters that are implemented in the centre of towns and cities offer the networks a quick way to cover their initial installation costs. This is a stark comparison to when they are implemented in more rural locations. This is because there are less people in the rural areas to contribute towards the costs. A research company in Finland has produced soem results that suggest an allowance of over 1000 euros per home should be provided for the costs of implementing the masts. This will cover upgrades to the existing infrastructure for the UK mobile broadband users that are pushing the services by conducting more than just basic web browsing and email.
The benefits of land line Internet are obviously quite clear. Faster speeds, higher download limits and more consistent service. Even though the best mobile broadband services offer monthly download allowances of up to 10GB, many users are now going over these limits.
Even so, the costs involved in providing every UK household with access to a land line Internet service are actually a lot higher than their portable Internet counterparts. It has been suggested that the cost per person is actually over 1300 euros per home. Based on this and the investment that has already been made in the portable Internet infrastructure, it appears that the mobile operators should be keen to capitalise on this and invest more in their infrastructures. This is also in light of the recent Digital Britain reports.
This is a key issue that will be reviewed over the coming months. The needs and requirements of the government, the consumer and the business itself.
