Mobile Broadband Compared to WiFi

The requirements of people for accessing hi speed Internet on the move is growing. Business requirements for transmitting data on the fly is a factor in this. The growth of access to Wi-Fi hotspots and UK mobile broadband modems are helping to meet this need, but how do they differ and which is the most practical?

WiFi can often get faster speeds and with netbooks and laptops containing a built in wireless connection, it is very practical. But obviously it relies on being in the proximity of a wireless connection. Best mobile broadband services are generally run off an external modem which does not make it hugely inconvenient, but it is something to lose. But more netbooks and laptops are being built with embedded modems to access the services.

A key area for consideration is what the user’s requirements are. What is the connection going to be used for and how long and where will it be needed. Is it going to be mainly in specific locations or will it be out and about. Wi-Fi provides some very high connections but the limiter is the connection distance. There are many hotspots around the country but there are many locations where hotspots do not exist such as on trains and certain public locations.

In contrast, portable Internet devices offer access to the Internet where ever the user requires. While the speeds may not be as fast as most Wi-Fi connections, it is now possible to get some very fast connections and Vodafone is pushing the boundaries with announcements for connections of over 20Mbps.

A key area to consider is cost. While there are some free WiFi hotspots available, many of the locations come with a charge. It may be by the hour or by the day. The costs for UK mobile broadband are actually exceedingly competitive and O2 and T-Mobile are actually offering free access to their Wi-Fi hotspots within the subscription charge. This is a great option for consumers wanting the best of both worlds.
