The UK government is pushing for Britain to gain a position as the leader of digital communications.
One of the key methods to achieve this goal is to work on development and upgrade of existing mobile broadband technology. The best chance of this is Long Term Evolution (LTE). LTE is regarded as the next generation or 4G or mobile broadband. It is expected to provide speeds in excess of 100Mbps.

Carter has stated that mobile communications has developed hugely over the last ten years and it is expected that this development should continue.

The Digital Britain report is pushing for a minimum service level for UK broadband. This could be provided by mobile broadband as well as its fixed line counterpart. The Swindon trials for LTE add to the commitment of achieving the goal.

Almost one fifth of Internet users access it by portable devices. The development of the technology is expected to hugely increase the number of people doing this. It is believed that by 2011 we will be seeing the 4G technology.
