With more operators offering free netbooks with a mobile broadband package and many of those offering built in mobile broadband functionality instead of a USB modem, it is worth considering whether built in is the best option for you.

Reception

A benefit of a netbook with integrated 3G modem is the reception. The netbook with an integrated 3G modem contains an a modem within the case. This offers superior reception than USB dongles as they have a much smaller casing with results in a much smaller aerial.

Tests have demonstrated there to be not a huge differences between the two. However, the integrated 3G modem proved to be better at connecting to the top end of the speed spectrum.

The integrated USB modem has also proved to be more effective at maintaining a connection on a train.

Practicality

An integrated USB modem is clearly more practical than a separate USB modem. It ensures that there is nothing to lose as well as not having a modem sticking out that could come unplugged during an Internet session. Having an integrated modem also helps with Window’s power management.

Flexibility in Upgrading

An area that having a USB dongle offers a benefit over having an integrated modem is that of upgrading. A further development may occur in mobile broadband technology which requires a new USB modem. If running an integrated unit it will obviously be more difficult to upgrade.

This should not apply too much of a threat in the UK. This is because all of the mobile broadband providers are concentrating on providing 3G and 3.5G services for the next few years. They had to invest billions in their 3G licences which is why it is unlikely that they will be looking at 4G for some time. It is also still not exactly clear what 4G is as there is not yet a clear definition.

What is a benefit with USB modems is partial upgrades in technology such as ability to reach faster speeds once networks have been upgraded.

Ability to Change Supplier

It is important to ensure that if you choose a netbook with built in 3G mobile broadband functionality that it is flexible to move to another provider. This is not normally a problem but it a worthwhile consideration.

Ability to Share

The benefit of having an external USB mobile broadband modem is that it is easy to share with friends or colleagues. There have also been a number of mobile broadband wireless routers released. If you are working with an integrated modem then you would not be able to share it as well.

Which one to Choose?

We can see that there are many things to consider when choosing an integrated modem or external USB modem. As we have seen, it is worth considering whether you want to share the modem or not and the future of the device. Both offer great options for the consumer.
