The interim Digital Britain report was released earlier in the year and has faced continued levels of criticism since. The full report is due to be released in the summer and is expected to face even further opposition.

The latest criticism comes around businesses that use VoIP and other voice and video services. The aim of the report is to provide a framework for updating the UK’s broadband and communication networks. One element will be people that hope to work at home. They may suffer from the use of VoIP.

Businesses are expected to be the worst hit by the plans of the report. This is because the base level of 2Mbps connection is just not quick enough to support many of the services that companies are set to rely on.

A commentator has stated that large businesses with home workers will struggle implementing VoIP technology and other network intensive applications and technologies.

Other people have also shared this view. They feel that even though the initial report is simply outlining some ideas, it is quite far away from where it needs to be.

The UK’s targets are quite far behind other European neighbours who have much higher levels and targets. Not enough effort in higher levels of broadband could see the UK fall further behind.
