2008 was the year that saw mobile broadband finally break through to the mainstream. By the end of the year, all of the major UK mobile networks now have mobile broadband offerings. Virgin Mobile were the last to launch a mobile broadband package in the final quarter. All of the major networks now have a vast array of packages covering varying contract terms and monthly download allowances. There are also a growing number of free laptop packages. Customers can choose from a range of laptops to be tied into their mobile broadband tariff.

Free laptop tariffs have been seen to contribute towards the huge growth of the service. The huge variety of options as well as very affordable entry level tariffs has also helped stimulate demand. Vodafone, O2 and 3 all offer Pay & Go options. There are also a number of high usage tariffs available.

Ofcom has announced that its plans for 2009/2010 will examine mobile broadband and look to deregulate the market. This could see further cost reductions as a result.

It has also been suggested that networks could increase coverage and upgrade speeds. This will ensure that it is a serious alternative to its fixed line counterparts.

2009 should see more tariffs launched, further price reductions and further increases in network speeds. It is predicted that mobile broadband usage will overtake fixed line broadband. However, it is uncertain whether 2009 will be the year for this to happen.
